1 John: God Is Light
1 John 1:5–10
God is light, so we cannot walk in darkness and claim to know him. When we stumble, we confess our sins, and he is faithful to forgive and cleanse us.
1 John: Walking as Jesus Walked
1 John 2:1–6
John writes so that we will not sin, but if we do, Jesus speaks for us before the Father. We know him by obeying him and living as he lived.
1 John: The Old Command to Love
1 John 2:6–11
If we claim to follow Jesus, we must live as he did. John calls us to love one another, because hating others means we are still in darkness.
1 John: Children, Fathers and Young Men
1 John 2:12–14
John writes to the whole church, to children, fathers and young men, to build their confidence. Their sins are forgiven, and they know God and have overcome the evil one.

1 John 2:18–23
John says it is the last hour and many antichrists have appeared, people who deny that Jesus is the Son. Those who deny the Son do not have the Father.
1 John: Remain in the Truth
1 John 2:24–29

1 John: Children of God
1 John 3:1–3
God's great love makes us his children, even though the world does not understand us. Our hope of seeing Jesus leads us to keep ourselves pure.
1 John: Love One Another
1 John 3:11–18
Love is the message from the beginning. Unlike Cain, we are to love in action, laying down our lives for others as Jesus did.
1 John: Confidence Before God
1 John 3:19–24
John wants his readers to be sure they belong to God. Loving in truth and obeying his commands give us confidence, and he lives in us by his Spirit.
1 John: Test the Spirits
1 John 4:1–6
False teachers are a constant danger to the church. John tells us to test every teaching by what it says about Jesus, and reminds us that God in us is greater than the world.
1 John: Love Comes from God
1 John 4:7–12
God is love, and he showed it by sending his Son. Since God loved us this way, we are called to love one another.
1 John: God's Love Is Made Complete
1 John 4:13–21
God has given us his Spirit, so we know we live in him. His love drives out fear, and because he first loved us, we love others.
1 John: Born of God and Overcoming
1 John 5:1–5
Everyone who believes Jesus is the Christ is born of God. Loving God means obeying him, and that faith overcomes the world.
1 John: Jesus Came by Water and Blood
1 John 5:5–12
Those who believe Jesus is the Son of God overcome the world. God has given reliable testimony about his Son, and eternal life is found only in Jesus.
1 John: Know You Have Eternal Life
1 John 5:13–17
John says why he wrote: so believers may know they have eternal life. The study reviews signs of new life in the letter and teaches confidence in prayer.
1 John: Knowing for Certain
1 John 5:18–21
John closes his letter with three things we know: God's children do not keep on sinning, we belong to God, and Jesus gives us true understanding. He ends by warning against idols.
