Ecclesiastes: Chasing the Wind
Ecclesiastes 1–12
An introduction to the book that says everything is meaningless. It records a teacher's view of life without God, so we learn how to read it and what it points us toward.
Life Under the Sun: Everything Is Meaningless
Ecclesiastes 1:2–3; 9:1
The Teacher tried work, wealth, wisdom, pleasure and power and found each empty. Circumstances change but cannot satisfy the soul or change our common destiny.
A Time for Everything
Ecclesiastes 3
There is a season for every activity, and we cannot change God's timing. Running life our own way brings frustration, but in Jesus we trust God to redeem all things.
Money Never Satisfies
Ecclesiastes 5:10–16
The Teacher says loving money never satisfies, and more resources without God bring no real gain. We are to hold money loosely, stop comparing, and give back the first fruits.
Seeking Balance Without God
Ecclesiastes 7:15–18
In a world where the righteous and the wicked both seem to suffer, the Teacher urges balance. Balance without God is chasing the wind, while pursuing Christ brings meaning.
Envy, Toil and Loneliness
Ecclesiastes 4:7–12
A man with no family works without end because he envies others, and his toil leaves him alone. Two are better than one, and the mind of Christ makes us humble.
Choose Life with God
Ecclesiastes 9:3–10
The Teacher sees the same end for everyone and sinks into despair. There is no formula for a meaningful life; we choose empty living alone or fulfillment with the Good Shepherd.
Fear God: The Whole Duty
Ecclesiastes 12
Wrapping up Ecclesiastes, every other path comes up empty and only God holds the answers. Following him is freeing, while life without him is frighteningly empty.
