Lord, Teach Us to Pray
Luke 11:1–13
A disciple asks Jesus to teach them to pray. His answer includes a model prayer and a promise that the Father gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask.
Our Father in Heaven
Matthew 6:9
Jesus begins the prayer with 'Our Father.' Only those who trust Christ become God's children, and that privilege lets us come to him with confidence.
Hallowed Be Your Name
Matthew 6:9
To hallow God's name is to honor it as holy. It is the first thing Jesus tells us to ask, and it means setting aside selfish ambition and quarrels.
Your Kingdom Come
Matthew 6:9–10
The prayer moves from honoring God to showing his values in daily life. Advancing his kingdom looks like righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
Your Will Be Done
Matthew 6:10
'Your will be done' is a kingdom prayer, not only about big decisions. Joseph revealing himself to his brothers shows God working his purposes through hard events.
Give Us Today Our Daily Bread
Matthew 6:11
Jesus teaches us to ask for daily needs and to depend on God to provide. He fed Israel with manna in the wilderness, and their clothes and shoes did not wear out.
Forgive Us as We Forgive
Matthew 6:12
We first ask God to forgive our debts, then forgive others out of gratitude. Because he wiped away our great debt, we can let go of the small ones.
Deliver Us from the Evil One
Matthew 6:13
Closing the study on prayer, the last request asks for protection from temptation and the enemy. Forgiveness looks back; this prayer looks ahead so we stay on mission.
