The Sermon on the Mount: Be Different
Matthew 5–7
Starting a new study, Jesus' longest sermon shows how his followers should differ from the world. The sermon sets out their character, devotion and choices, and calls them to be different.
The Beatitudes: Poor in Spirit
Matthew 5:3–6
Jesus opens his sermon with blessings on those who are poor in spirit, mourn, are meek and hunger for righteousness. These first four show what we need to become.
The Beatitudes: Mercy, Purity and Peace
Matthew 5:7–12
The last four Beatitudes show the fruit of a changed life: mercy, a pure heart, peacemaking and joy under persecution. Those who live this way are blessed in God's kingdom.
Salt and Light
Matthew 5:13–16
Jesus calls his followers the salt of the earth and the light of the world. We are to stay distinct and let our good works shine so that others give glory to God.
Jesus Came to Fulfill the Law
Matthew 5:17–20
Jesus says he did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it. He fully obeys what the Law and Prophets pointed to, and calls his people to a deeper righteousness.
Anger and Lust: Righteousness of the Heart
Matthew 5:21–30
Jesus teaches that God's standard goes deeper than outward behavior. Anger and lust begin in the heart, so we are to seek peace and purity within.
Love Your Enemies
Matthew 5:43–48
Jesus corrects the saying 'love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' We are to love and pray for our enemies, just as our Father shows kindness to all.
Righteousness Without the Show
Matthew 6:1–18
Jesus warns against giving, praying and fasting to be seen by others. Done in secret for our Father, these acts are rewarded by him instead of by applause.
How to Pray: Sincere, Not Wordy
Matthew 6:7–15
Pagans pray as if many words will get a god's attention, but our Father already knows what we need. Jesus teaches us to pray sincerely and thoughtfully.
Do Not Judge: Log and Speck
Matthew 7:1–6
Jesus does not forbid all judging, but warns against hypocrisy. First remove the log from your own eye, then help others with kindness and care.
The Narrow Gate and False Prophets
Matthew 7:13–20
Jesus says there is only one way into his kingdom, a narrow gate. He warns of false teachers who look like sheep, and says we know them by their fruit.
Hearing and Doing: Build on the Rock
Matthew 7:21–29
Jesus ends his sermon with a warning: it is not enough to say 'Lord, Lord.' Those who hear his words and obey them build on solid rock and stand firm.
