The Seven Deadly Sins: Where They Come From
Genesis 3
The seven deadly sins are not a list in Scripture but a later church summary of sins that harm us. They trace back to pride in the garden, the sin that started all the others.
Envy: Resentment That Kills
Proverbs 14:30
Envy is resentment at another person's good fortune, and it was behind Jesus' arrest. A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy eats away at us from inside.
Gluttony: When Appetite Rules Us
Philippians 3:17–21
Scripture's problem is gluttony, not body size. Paul warns of those whose god is their stomach, so we ask whether we consume our food or our food consumes us.
Lust: Desire That Leads to Death
James 1:13–15
God gave us desires, but when they are fed wrongly, desire gives birth to sin and sin grows into death. Knowing how this works helps us turn back to God.
Anger: Choosing Restraint
Romans 12:17–21
A fool gives full vent to anger, but the wise hold it back. Paul tells believers not to repay evil for evil, so we choose restraint and leave justice to God.
Greed: Holding Possessions Loosely
Romans 8:5–7
God gives us good things to enjoy, but greed steals that joy. Asking God before we buy and giving generously keeps us free as caretakers of what he has trusted to us.
Sloth: Zeal for God's House
John 2:13–17
Closing the series, sloth is more than laziness; it is indifference to God. Jesus cleared the temple with zeal, the opposite of apathy, and calls us to be fully engaged.
