The Ten Commandments: Rules to Live By
Exodus 20:1–20
Starting a new study, the Ten Commandments are not suggestions but the heart of God's covenant. The first four are about loving God, and the last six are about loving others.
The Law, the Covenant and Christ
Exodus 20:1–20
God gave the law to Israel as part of his covenant, and they failed to keep it. Christ redeemed us from the law's curse and fulfilled it, so we obey out of love.
No Other Gods and No Idols
Exodus 20:1–6
The first commandment is about what we worship, and the second is about how. God is jealous for our worship, and nothing we make or love should take his place.
The Third Commandment: Honor God's Name
Exodus 20:7
God's name is not to be misused, whether in curses, careless words or empty claims. We are to carry the name of the Lord with the weight it deserves.
The Fourth Commandment: Remember the Sabbath
Exodus 20:8–11
God sets a pattern of work and rest and calls us to keep a day holy for worship and rest. Christians have not always agreed on how, but the command still stands.
The Fifth Commandment: Honor Your Parents
Exodus 20:12
The first four commandments are about loving God and the next six about loving people, beginning with parents. We honor them in word and deed, even when the relationship has been hard.
The Sixth Commandment: Do Not Murder
Exodus 20:13
Because people are made in God's image, human life is precious, and the sixth commandment protects it. Hatred in the heart also breaks it, so we are to love one another.
The Seventh Commandment: Marriage and Family
Exodus 20:14; Genesis 2:18–24
God made man and woman to complete each other, and the family is his design. The seventh commandment protects marriage, and God's grace can heal where adultery has done harm.
The Eighth Commandment: Do Not Steal
Exodus 20:15
Stealing is more than taking property. It breaks trust and dishonors God. We can steal actively or by neglect, and God forgives when we ask.
